Characteristics

Deciduous tree valued for its spectacular floration. There are lots of varieties with fragrant white and pink flowers.


Place

Outside in a Mediterranean climate the whole year and exposed to the sun but better place it in half-shadow during summer.


Irrigation

Abundant in summer and moderate in winter.


Fertilization

Spring and autumn.

Transplant

Every two years in spring.

Substratum

100% Akadama or mixed with a 20% of volcanic earth.

Pruning after the blossoming period. Trim back hard after flowering. Allow rampant growth in summer, trim resulting shoots back again in autumn.

Curiosities

In Japan, the most valued variety for a bonsai is called Yabai, from its white flower. There aren’t many varieties of this specie. The majority are trees recovered from areas burned every year by farmers to use them as fields. These trees were formed by these fires after which they sproutes again.
