Interview with Hyakuman Yuuki, Manga author and bonsai enthusiast

To celebrate the International Women’s Day, from Mistral Bonsai we want to pay tribute to women who, with their dedication and passion, have excelled in the bonsai world. Through their work, teaching and inspiration, they have transformed and enriched this millenary art, proving that bonsai is a space for everyone, whatever their gender. In this interview we highlight Hyakuman Yuuki, a distinguished Manga author and bonsai lover, who has successfully combined her deep passion for nature with her artistic talent, bringing the art of bonsai to a wider audience.

1. How did your interest in bonsai begin?

My interest in bonsai began through my love for nature and plants. I was always attracted to the care of small life forms, and bonsai, with their delicacy, captivated me from the very beginning. I started learning as a beginner, and it was that experience that I captured in my series Life with Bonsai as Seen by a Manga Author.

2. What made you combine your passion for Manga with the world of bonsai?

I realised that bonsai has a lot to do with patience and personal connection, something that is also reflected in the creative process of Manga. I decided to create a series that would show the daily life of bonsai enthusiasts in a more accessible and approachable way, especially for those of us who, like me, are beginners.

3. Why do you think there are fewer women in the bonsai world, both in Japan and in Europe?

In Japan, there are quite a few women bonsai enthusiasts, but culturally they have a tendency to focus more on small-sized bonsai. However, many women participate actively in exhibitions and win prizes in important competitions, such as the Kokufu Bonsai Ten. In Europe, I think the reason is similar, women have less visibility in this world, although their presence is growing.

4. What can you tell us about the online bonsai community you run?

The online community that I manage together with Kimiko Shindo and Chie Yamazaki is a dedicated space only for women. Through this community, we want women to feel more free to share their bonsai passion without the restrictions sometimes felt in other spaces. We believe that this safe and supportive environment encourages learning and connection between all participants. You can see our work at: https://bonsukijyo.jimdosite.com

5. For those who are just starting in the bonsai world, what advice would you give them?

My main advice is to be patient. Bonsai is a practice that requires time and dedication. It is not only about technique, but also about establishing a relationship with the plant. Don’t be afraid to make mistakes; it is part of the learning process.
