Interview with Lorena Vilas, passion and dedication in bonsai world

To celebrate the International Women’s Day, from Mistral Bonsai we want to pay tribute to women who, with their dedication and passion, have excelled in the bonsai world. Through their work, teachings and inspiration, they have transformed and enriched this millenary art, proving that bonsai is a space for everyone, whatever their gender. In this interview, we talk with Lorena Vilas, one of the most relevant Spanish women’s voices in this world, whose career inspires new generations to cultivate not only trees, but also dreams.
1. How many years have you been in the bonsai world?
My name is Lorena Vilas, and I have been involved in the fascinating bonsai world since 2008, when I was only 17 years old. From that moment, the art of bonsai became a great passion for me.
2. What encouraged you to begin in this art?
I started in this art due to a very close influence, since my boyfriend, now my husband, Rubén Ciezar Villanueva, was the one who introduced me. Thanks to his passion, he motivated me to go deeper and learn more about the care and philosophy behind the cultivation of bonsai trees.
3. What advice would you give to women who are starting out in the bonsai world?
My advice would be not to be afraid to enter into this art, even though it may seem complicated at first. It is important to read books, attend introductory courses, participate in workshops and congresses, and surround yourself with people who share the same passion. The most important thing is perseverance and enjoying the learning process, without any rushing.
4. What projects or goals do you have for the future?
Together with my husband, Rubén, one of our biggest dreams and projects is to create a Bonsai Museum. We want to share our passion and knowledge of this art with others, as well as preserve the legacy of bonsai and promote its learning for future generations.
