Japanese Maple Bonsai Care

Location: The Japanese Maple is a bonsai that should be placed outdoors, in a sunny and airy spot. In summer, it should be protected from direct sunlight and placed in a shady area so as not to burn its leaves. In winter, although it is frost resistant, it is advisable to protect the bonsai maple from temperatures below 10 °C.

Feeding: In spring and autumn. The use of solid organic fertilizers, such as Hiryo Gold for example, work well with the Acer bonsai. If stronger growth is desired, it can be supplemented with a liquid fertiliser.

Pruning and pinching: Pinching of the shoots and twigs can be done throughout the spring by finger-pruning the new shoot, leaving the first two leaves. Pruning of the branches is carried out at the beginning of spring budding. The use of sealing pastes on Japanese maples is recommended because of their antifungal function, as acers are vulnerable to certain diseases that can enter through wounds.

Soil and watering: Water abundantly during the growing season and especially on the hottest days in summer. For this reason, a very draining substrate is recommended. You can add Sakadama, Akadama or Pomice to oxygenate and add drainage to your mix.
