Mediterranean bonsai

These are typical Mediterranean trees, they live better outside because they need both the sun and the cold to produce fruit. Most are grown in our fields in Tarragona, the most representatives are: olives, citrus and apple.

Characteristics

Small bush or tree with deciduous or permanent leaves depending on the variety. Produces white or pink flowers and its small fruits are of red, yellow, orange and black colour. There exist about 100 varieties.


Location

In zones of Mediterranean climate it can be placed in the exterior during the whole year. In colder zones it’s convenient to protect it against frost.


Watering

Abundant in summer and in moderation in winter.


Fertilization

In spring and autumn but not during flowering.

Re-potting

Every 2 years, at the beginning of spring.

Substrate

100% Akadama, or a mixture of Akadama with a 20% of volcanic earth.


Pruning and pinching

Pruning

New shoots in spring.

Pinching

When the branch has developed from 6 to 8 leaves, cut the leaves and leave only 2 of them.

Wiring

During the whole year.
