Mediterranean bonsai

These are typical Mediterranean trees, they live better outside because they need both the sun and the cold to produce fruit. Most are grown in our fields in Tarragona, the most representatives are: olives, citrus and apple.

Characteristics

Deciduous shrub, blooms in spring with beautiful white flowers. Its leaves have a very marked green nerve, which changes to purple red in autumn.


Location

Outdoor, in full sun throughout the year.


Watering

Abundantly in summer, and moderately in winter.


Fertilization

Spring and autumn.

Re-potting

Every 2 to 3 years, in spring.

Substrate

100% Akadama, or mixed with a 20% of volcanic gravel.


Pruning and pinching

Pruning

Throughout the growing season.

Pinching

When the new shoots have grown to 6 to 8 leaves, cut down to 2 leaves. The defoliation can be total or partial, by pinching the terminal bud.

Wiring

Throughout the year, better in spring.


Curiosities

Although it adapts to all types of soil texture, it prefers deep, fertile and not very dry soils. It shows a beautiful autumnal chromatic change.
